What We Can Learn From Robin Williams’ Death

The world was shocked when Robin Williams committed suicide on August 11, 2014.  He was an accomplished comedian and actor, making audiences of all ages laugh and enjoy themselves.  Despite the joy he brought people, Williams fought personal battles with drug and alcohol addiction and severe depression.  He often joked about these serious topics in his comedy routines and was always open about them.

Before his death, Williams sought help and entered a rehabilitation clinic to treat his alcoholism.  The treatment was not enough to help him and his pain drove him to take his own life.

KVC Kentucky works with many children and families who are dealing with the same problems as Williams.  Many of our clients are diagnosed with depression, which is one of the most common mental health problems.  Mental Health America says:

“Clinical depression is one of the most common mental illnesses, affecting more than 19 million Americans each year. This includes major depressive disorder, manic depression and dysthymia, a milder, longer-lasting form of depression.”

KVC Kentucky works with our clients to ensure they receive an accurate diagnosis of their depression, followed by an individualized therapy and treatment plan to treat the illness.  Clients in our Family Preservation, Diversion, and Behavioral Health Service Programs work with therapists to ensure they don’t fall victim to depression like Williams.197659_102040259897527_5111970_n

Williams’ life promoted laughter and happiness, but his death caused much grief.  We can learn from his death that it’s important to seek help for depression and substance abuse. It takes a lot of willpower and strength to combat the illness.  One of the keys to overcoming any sort of addiction is support from friends, family, and community.  Overcoming these illnesses isn’t easy, but organizations like KVC Kentucky are there to hold your hand.
