Back-to-School Supply Drive Gives Children a Positive Start to the School Year

School bells were ringing on the morning of August 10 in Fayette County to signal the start of a new school year. As children filed into their classrooms, more than 50 children who are receiving services from KVC Kentucky returned to school with new backpacks filled with school supplies. Generous community donors participated in our Back-to-School supply drive in order to help set the foundation for these children to have a positive start to the school year.

Every year, we are reminded how expensive school supplies can be and how this can create stress in families who struggle to meet even their most basic needs. This summer, KVC Kentucky accepted donations of new backpacks, pencils, notebooks, crayons and more that were then given to the families we serve who cannot always afford to send their children to school with a new set of school supplies. To a student, having the right school supplies can give them that “new gear” feeling — a boost of confidence, a sense of accomplishment and even feelings of excitement for the year ahead. All these things are crucial for successful learning.
The majority of the donations were collected on July 13 at the The Club at UK’s Spindletop Hall during the Lexington Country Club’s swim meet, which had a superhero theme to support the idea of being a superhero for Kentucky’s kids. The swim and dive teams dressed up like superheroes  and donated an astounding amount of school supplies and gift cards to KVC. Both teams donated over 500 pencils, 40 notebooks, 15 backpacks, 40 glue sticks, countless crayons, markers, and colored pencils, including cash and gift card donations. The gift cards were then used to purchase items that will help the children we serve rise to the top of the class.
“We were quickly overwhelmed by the generous donations from both teams and we were delighted to give the backpacks, crayons, pencils and notebooks to all of KVC Kentucky’s children in need! What warmed our hearts the most was the excitement and joy on each child’s face as they brought school supplies to the donation table. It was an inspirational example of kids helping kids in true “Superhero” fashion.” -Meredith Meyer, Marketing and Outreach Coordinator
